Castries City

The city of Castries is located on the west coast of Saint Lucia at the south end of a natural harbor.  It is surrounded by tall mountains with lush vegetation.

Although the city has a population of 20,000 inhabitants, the downtown area is actually quite small.  Visitors can explore downtown Castries in half a day.

Downtown Castries

The city was destroyed by fire in past years, the last of which occurred in 1949.  As a result, most of the colonial buildings were destroyed and replaced with unattractive buildings.

There are several foreign banks and small shopping centres in downtown Castries.
